I’m not one that watches a lot of TV, especially at this point in life, simply because I don’t have a lot of time to do it, and i feel guilty after doing it, because I typically have homework, something to write, or have neglected my guitar for too long, and need to get the little guy out. I do have a few shows though, that bring joy to my heart because they’re typically more than just entertainment for some reason.
For a long time now, M*A*S*H has been of my favorite television shows. I genuinely admire Father Mulcahy; when I was a kid, he made me want to be a priest, which was interesting, considering that I didn’t go to church and really didn’t know jack about Jesus. I also happen to love Scrubs, because it’s funny, and I occasionally can relate to and laud JD, the main character because he always makes a fool out of himself and does stupid crap, but in the end, he saves lives. More than television, I watch a lot of Mark Driscoll’s sermons and listen to his podcasts in my car because I truly think highly of him; he’s a grumpy ho with great theology who God is using to reach the city of Seattle. I can relate to him, too; he has to make a lot of apologies for saying things that he shouldn’t have. I have heroes that I see and interact with on a daily basis as well, but I have to say that the media have put individuals in a place where they can be admired by a lot more people.
I’ve always been big on having heroes in my life because I have a lot of ambition; it’s disgusting, believe me. I look to other people to see what they did to get somewhere, for inspiration because most of the time, they make mistakes and their lives weren’t always great, and because it’s nice to see someone that you think you’re similar to in a place where they’re doing something with their lives. Because of this, I’m beginning to understand something in a light that is entirely new to me, even though it’s incredible NOT profound.
Impatience does not couple well with ambition! That’s yet another reason why I look to other people, to see how they didn’t explode all over the place while waiting to get to where God was leading them. We have patriarchs and others to look to as well; obviously, the Bible is the best place to look when you’re feeling impatient, especially compared to ANYONE I’ll find on television, more than likely better than anyone that’s alive.
